Star Trek Enterprise 2nd Season DVD Review

For those of you who may not be aware, Enterprise takes place in the 22nd century. Sort of between real time now and the days of Captain Kirk. Enterprise takes place in an era when interstellar travel is still in its infancy. Captain Jonathan Archer (Scott Bakula) has assembled a crew of brave explorers to chart the galaxy on a revolutionary spacecraft: Enterprise NX-01.

Enterprise has taken some hits from critics. I am a trekker of sorts, having gotten hooked on the original series (TOS) and I like Enterprise. Season Two has some excellent episodes and the cast seems to be moving more comfortably in the skins of their characters.

The packaging is expensive. It has a high tech looking hard plastic outer case, an inner slip sleeve and then the hard plastic case for the 7 single sided discs.

One of my favorite episodes, “A Night in Sickbay” is on this second season set. Archer, T’Pol, Hoshi and Porthos return from an away mission to a planet populated by cantakerous etiquette crazy beings. When decontaminating (see picture above) we learn that Porthos the dog has picked up a dangerous pathogen. Archer spends the night in and out of sickbay while Dr. Phlox tries to save his dog. It’s a wonderfully intimate episode.

“Stigma” is a thinly veiled statement on the AIDS crisis. Social commentary is a long standing Star Trek tradition. In this episode, T’Pol has contracted a disease which is transmitted by mind melding. Vulcan High Command is reluctant to do much to help eradicate the disease because mind melding at this point in Vulcan history is considered distasteful. This episode includes Text Commentary.

“Dead Stop” revolves around and mysteriously wonderful space repair station where all your human wishes and needs can be fulfilled. Captain Archer becomes worried that what seems to good to be true may hide a dark secret. As usual, he is right! This episode includes Audio Commentary by Michael Sussman and Phyllis Strong.

Star Trek Enterprise 3rd Season DVD Review

This is arguably the best season for the show. Enterprise becomes more serious and edgy. The characters lose the “gee whiz, we’re in outer space” naivete as they evolve into seasoned space travelers.

The “Xindi saga” runs all year like a 24 episode story arc. For those who don’t know this, the Xindi are a multi-species race determined to destroy Earth. The Xindi include reptiles, fish and primates. Like all divergent cultures, the various Xindi species have opposing points of views. The trick is to get some of them on Earth’s side.

Because this year’s mission is to save Earth, you find a determined crew. Jonathan Archer (Scott Bakula) struggles through emotional dilemnas when he needs to cross moral boundaries to accomplish his mission.

Not all of Season 3 is grim. We learn about Vulcan “neuro-pressure” as T’Pol gives the sleepless Tucker some very sexy demonstrations of the art. This fuels speculation as to a possible romance between the two. In other respects, it is a tough year for T’Pol as she battles Pa’nar syndrome which facilitates the very emotions Vulcans fight to repress.

Favorite Episodes:
Twilight – 12 years in the future Archer learns that the Xindi have destroyed all but 9,000 humans. Suffering from a disease which inhibits him from forming long-term memories, he is cared for by T’Pol. An interstng speculation as to what could possibly develop between T’Pol and Archer.
Similitude – Phlox clones Trip in order to produce a transplant organ to save his life. Yet the newly made Trip has different ideas about sacrificing himself.
Harbinger – We meet the trans-dimensional Sphere Builders when Archer brings aboard an alien in a craft inside a spatial anomaly.
E2 – Pure Star Trek. In an attempt to use a dangerous sub-space corridor, Enterprise is contacted by another Enterprise from the past, crewed by descendants of Archer’s crew.
