Lois and Clark Complete 1st Season DVD Review
I have always been a big fan of Superman. As a girl, I used to borrow my neighbor's comics. She was a serious collector and the loan came with strict admonitions as to their care. I watched George Reeves in the 1952 - 1957 Adventures of Superman and the late Christopher Reeve in the movies. So when I heard there was to be another TV series, I was skeptical.

Would they protect the magical myth that is Superman? Will a new vision of the Man of Steel revise the fable past recognition?

I need not have worried. Lois and Clark, the New Adventures of Superman was just a delight. A more human Superman and a more modern Lois had pizzazz. They were fun to watch. The many winked references to the original TV show felt like tribute.

This version of Clark Kent/Superman (Dean Cain) shows us a guy with something of an identity crisis. He's from another planet, but its not like he went to Krypton Senior High. He grew up as an average American boy, well, except for the flying, x-ray vision, invincible thing. He leaves the farm for the city and loves the pace even though he flies home frequently for advice from his folks. He's crazy about the girl but she's crazy about Superman, well, that's him but not him.

Lois (Teri Hatcher) is a no-nonsense working woman who has sacrificed her personal life for her job. She goes after and gets her story but retreats to ice cream in bed at the end of the day.

The late Lane Smith plays Perry White. The newer version of the newspaper chief is an avid Elvis Presley fan. White's favorite expression changed from "Great Caesar's ghost!" to "Great shades of Elvis!" Then there is the deliciously evil Lex Luther played to perfection by John Shea. He's so rich, so slick, so sophisticated and oh, so bad. Michael Landes does a one year stint as Jimmie Olsen. Tracy Scoggins does a sexy turn as Catherine "Cat" Grant. She wants Clark Kent, mild mannered but nicely muscled reporter for the Daily Planet.

We want Lois and Clark to get together. The producers were real tight on this and we had to wait and wait for the big moment. But here at the beginning, in Season One, we watch the mating dance.

SPECIAL FEATURES
Warner's was very generous with this one. First as part of Warner Televisions 50th anniversary celebration, it includes a bonus DVD. My set had an episode of Smallville. The pilot is here and good news! It contains scenes not originally aired plus commentary by Deborah Joy LeVine (creator/executive producer), Dean Cain and Robert Butler (director/executive producer).

Pilot Presentation - This is Deborah Joy LeVine's original presentation to ComicCon.

From Rivals to Romance: The Making of Lois & Clark - a great featurette that includes comments by most of the cast and production people.

Taking Flight: The Visual Effects of Lois & Clark - how they did the effects. Don't watch if it would ruin it for you to see Cain on wires.
