Homicide: Life on the Street Complete 7th Season DVD Review

Let's get this out of the way. No Andre Braugher. No Pembleton. He isn't in the final season. Is he missed? Yes, he was a dynamic character on the show. But the cast of Homicide was always fluid, and this ensemble sails along quite dramatically without Pembleton.

For one thing, Bayliss (Kyle Secor) is no longer the idealistic rookie. He has come full circle to become as jaded as any veteran. He is now his own man and not Pembleton's shadow. Also, we get two new characters, Det. Renée Sheppard (Michael Michele) and Lt. Giardello's FBI agent son, Mike (Giancarlo Esposito).

Mike Kellerman (Reed Diamond) is back as a private investigator in the 2 parter "Kellerman, P.I." You'll see the Law & Order gang, Benjamin Bratt, Jerry Orbach, and Sam Waterston in part 2 of a crossover ("Sideshow").

Homicide: Life on the Street was always a thinking person's cop show that examined behavior not actions. The camera always had an energy of its own with the quick jump cuts and repeating scene frames. This is still very much evident in Season 7. And we have the familiar big board with its unsolved red names and solved black ones.

A main story arc centers around internet killer Luke Ryland. When Ryland is released on a technicality, Bayliss is unable to handle his anger and disappointment, striking ADA Ed Danvers (Zeljko Ivanek). (Spoiler coming) In the final episode Ryland is found murdered and Bayliss is seen packing up his desk. But you will have to additionally purchase Homicide: The Movie, the follow-up made for TV movie, to discover if Bayliss is guilty.

(Excellent!) Live Panel Discussion with Tom Fontana, Barry Levinson, James Yoshimura, and David Simon
