Michael Landon

Michael Landon as Jonathan Smith
Victor French as Mark Gordon

When television megastar Michael Landon created his first original series, he set out to give viewers a little slice of heaven. He certainly succeeded with HIGHWAY TO HEAVEN in which he portrayed guardian angel "Jonathan Smith" charged with assisting wayward souls. A quintessential family drama championing good values, strength of character, and kindness, this award-winning show earned legions of devoted fans. Since leaving the air in 1989, Landon's top-rated series has been sorely missed, especially in today's cluttered pop culture landscape where quality family entertainment is at a premium.

Highway to Heaven Complete 1st Season DVD Review

The first thing you notice is the heft of the package! Each of the 7 DVDs is in an individual plastic case. This makes the care and preservation of the discs so much easier.

Highway to Heaven is really the Michael Landon Show. He produces and stars in it as well as writing and directing many of the episdoes. Victor French directed quite a few too. But it is Michael Landon's heart and sense of kindness which shines in this family drama.

The set includes the 2 part pilot which I had never seen. I guess by time I saw the show, either in the 80s or in reruns, Landon (Jonathan Smith) was already wandering the country aiding people with Victor French (Mark Gordon) at his side. The pilot explains how they met and how an embittered ex-cop learns the joy of helping.

Michael Landon was always on TV, or so it seemed to those of us who first knew him as Little Joe Cartwright on Bonanza (1959-1973) Then he had a long turn as Charles "Pa" Ingalls on Little House on the Prairie (1974-1983). While we all remember with sorrow the fight with pancreatic cancer that took his life in 1991, here on Highway to Heaven, Landon is still healthy and robust, at the peak of his craft. I didn't occur to me until I saw him again, that Landon and his vision of entertainment are so sorely missed.

For those of you who may not know this...In the 5th Season of Highway to Heaven, Victor French was diagnosed with lung cancer. He lived just long enough to finish the last episode and then died. Michael Landon was devastated and pulled the plug on Highway.

The Special Features include "Michael Landon: Memories with Laughter and Love," a documentary tribute to the beloved actor and producer. For Landon fans, this is a must see as it was done by his 9 kids and gives a glimpse into the life of the man. There are outtakes but not enough. I enjoyed them and hope they add a bunch more for the 2nd Season.
