I will now tell you all I have learned about getting attention for your brand new web pages. Do it yourself. Or hire someone to do it for you. I could quit right there and probably have imparted the most important info you can get. Don't rely on the services which say they'll submit you to 5 billion sites. They will, but that's you and 1,000 others for that day alone. No way they can possibly tailor individual submissions to maximize exposure. Let's start with the searches. There are two kinds of sites - directories and search engines. Alta Vista is an engine while Yahoo is a directory. Alta Vista "spiders" your site while Yahoo has some human being actually look at it. What's a spider? A computer program that zips on over to your site, memorizes all that's there, following links to each of your pages, and takes all that info back to the main database. Cool. But, there are nuiances. When you list with Alta Vista it will spider your first page ONLY. But, they will have that page in the database within a day or so. It takes weeks and weeks for them to get back to index the rest of your site. Now, HotBot spiders, but they get the whole site on the first pass. Figure 2-4 weeks. Slightly longer for Excite, using the same process. The directories all take longer. Plus they place a heavier emphasis on categories.Yahoo will take six weeks easy. Lycos falls close to that. Take the time to read each search's instructions. Or, and this would be my preference, hire someone who understands how to get your site listed so it's competitive. So you've just got your site up and you've notified the searches. Imagine your excitement that first time you get a count of your visitors! 103 accesses! Yes! I built it and they came. Then you figure out that you're 85 of them and your best friend was good for 15. What to do? Surf. Until you get picked up by the search engines and even after, links are a wonderful way to attract like minded visitors to your site. Having a link on a related site places your name in front of a built-in audience. Don't forget the newsgroups. These people can be both your new customers and your new friends. However, be forewarned. This can be a very time consuming process. And, you need enough experience on the Net to find the right places for you.
