Gloria Stuart (Old Rose): This was
mine. How extraordinary! And it looks the same as when I last used it. ...The
reflection's changed a bit.
Gloria Stuart (Old Rose): It's been
84 years, and I can still smell the fresh paint. The china had never been used.
The sheets had never been slept in. Titanic was called the Ship of Dreams, and
it was. It really was.
Gloria Stuart (Old Rose): Afterward, the
seven hundred people in the boats had nothing to do but wait: wait to die, wait
to live, wait for an absolution which would never come.
Kate
Winslet (Rose DeWitt Bukater): It doesn't look any bigger than the
Mauritania. Billy Zane (Cal Hockley): You can be blasé about
some things, Rose, but not about Titanic. It's over a hundred feet longer than
the Mauritania and far more luxurious.
Frances Fisher (Ruth
DeWitt Bukater): So this is the ship they say is unsinkable. Billy
Zane (Cal): It is unsinkable. God himself couldn't sink this ship.
(Trying to stop Rose from committing suicide by jumping from the ship.)
Leonardo DiCaprio (Jack Dawson): I'm not looking forward to jumping
in after you. But like I said, I don't see a choice. I guess I'm kinda hoping
you'll come back over the rail and get me off the hook here. Kate
Winslet (Rose):You're crazy! Leonardo DiCaprio (Jack): That's
what everybody says, but with all due respect miss, I'm not the one hanging off
the back of a ship here.
Leonardo DiCaprio (Jack): I'm the king
of the world!
Kate Winslet (Rose): I believe you are blushing,
Mr. Big Artiste. I can't imagine Monsieur Monet blushing. Leonardo
DiCaprio (Jack): He does landscapes.
Jonathan Hyde (J. Bruce
Ismay): So you've not lit the last four boilers then? Bernard Hill
(Capt. Edward J. Smith): No, I do not see the need. We are making excellent
time. Jonathan Hyde (Ismay): The press knows the size of Titanic,
now I want them to marvel at her speed, too. We must give them something new to
print. And the maiden voyage of Titanic must make headlines!
Jason
Barry (Tommy Ryan): Music to drown by. Now I know I'm in first class.
Victor Garber (Thomas Andrews): The pumps will buy you time, but
minutes only. From this moment, no matter what we do, Titanic will founder.
Jonathan Hyde (Ismay): But this ship can't sink! Victor
Garber (Andrews): She is made of iron, sir. I assure you, she can. And she
will. It is a mathematical certainty.
Bernard Hill (Capt.
Smith): How many souls on board, Mr. Murdoch? Ewan Stewart
(Murdoch): 2,200 souls on board, sir. Bernard Hill (Capt.
Smith): Well, I believe you may get your headlines, Mr. Ismay.
Kate
Winslet (Rose): Mr. Andrews! I saw the iceberg, and I see it in your
eyes... please, tell me the truth! Victor Garber (Andrews): In
another hour, all of this, all you see here... will be at the bottom of the
Atlantic. Please get to a lifeboat as fast as you can!
Kate
Winslet (Rose): Excuse me, Mr. Andrews, but I've been doing the math in my
head and it seems that with the number of people there are on board, there
aren't enough lifeboats. Victor Garber (Andrews): Not enough by half
actually. Gosh, Rose, you miss nothing do you? I had originally intended for
there to be more, but it was thought by some that it would make the decks seem
too cluttered. Billy Zane (Cal): A waste of space as it is on an
unsinkable ship.
Kate Winslet (Rose): I love you Jack.
Leonardo DiCaprio (Jack): Don't you do that, don't say your
good-byes. Kate Winslet (Rose): I'm so cold. Leonardo
DiCaprio (Jack): I don't know about you, but I intend on writing a strongly
worded letter to the White Star Line about all of this. You're gonna go on, and
make lots of babies, and watch them grow. You're gonna die an old lady, warm in
her bed. Not here, not this night. Do you understand me? Winning that ticket,
Rose, was the best thing that ever happened to me... it brought me to you. And
I'm thankful for that, Rose. I'm thankful. You must do me this honor, Rose.
Promise me you'll survive. That you won't give up, no matter what happens, no
matter how hopeless. Promise me now, Rose, and never let go of that promise.
Kate Winslet (Rose): I promise. Leonardo DiCaprio (Jack):
Never let go. Kate Winslet (Rose): I'll never let go. I'll never let
go, Jack.

Did you know? That the movie cost
more than Titanic itself? The movie cost 200 million dollars. The real boat
cost 1.5 million pounds, or 7.5 milion dollars. Adjusted for inflation and
time, that's still maybe 120-150 million.
That director James Cameron,
with the help of his brother Mike, spent hours filming the actual wreck. He was
moved by the experience and made many of the dives himself.
That the
studio wanted Matthew McConaughey to play Jack and the role of Rose was
originally offered to Gwyneth Paltrow. Enya was first choice for the
score.
That James Cameron drew all the pictures in Jack's sketchbook,
including the one of Rose with the necklace. Those are Cameron's hands we
see.
That a nearly full size ship's exterior was built on a beach south
of Rosarito, Baja California, Mexico. Well, one side of the ship anyway, the
starboard. It had hydraulic lifts and was split in half for the sinking scenes.
After filming, it was sold for scrap metal. Yikes.
Many of the interior
decor details were provided by and produced by the very companies who made the
originals for Titanic.
After sampling the caviar provided for the
first-class dinner scene, Jonathan Hyde said he "made an acting decision on the
spot that Ismay was a big eater". |
