Dick Van Dyke Show Tidbits The Dick Van Dyke Show is rightly considered a classic. Although, it got off to a slow start and showed poorly in its first year of ratings, once people discovered this delight, it climbed quickly in the ratings. The story centered around The Petries, Rob and Laura, and their son Ritchie. Rob was the head writer for the Alan Brady Show, a job he was assisted in by Sally (Rose Marie) and Buddy (Morey Amsterdam). Balding Mel (Richard Deacon) was the producer and brother-in-law of the fictional show's star, Alan Brady (Carl Reiner). Brady wasn't actually seen, however, later in the series. With or without the toupee that was the butt of many jokes. Buddy was married to Pickles and Sally was always husband searching. The pair performed as a comedy team called Gilbert and Solomon. Eventually, some shows were done as flashbacks to the days when Rob and Laura courted. The Dick Van Dyke Show went off the air not because of poor ratings, but because the stars wanted to pursue other interests. They quit at the top. Passings Richard Deacon died in 1984 of hypertensive heart disease, Jerry Paris in 1986 of a brain tumor, Morey Amsterdam in 1996 of a heart attack. |
